Prison riot in Shwe Bo, Sagaing division, which claims 4 lives and injured inmates was under control after the prison authorities and police used force to disperse the protesting inmates.
The prison riot in Shwe Bo was begun on May 8, where the inmates protest for amnesty. The inmates confront with the prison authorities that the prison authorities opens fire where four inmates died and two injured.
On the morning of May 9, Sagain regional Chief Minister U Myint Naing and minister of security and border affairs, together with the local authorities arrived Shwe Bo Prison and meet with the representatives of the protesting inmates.
Sagaing regional Chief Minister Dr. Myint Naing told the journalists, at Shwe Bo prison, that the protesting inmates become uncontrollable that the authorities used force to disperse the riot.
“We told the inmates to calm down and go back to their rooms. But they kept gathered in the prison compound. Then, the prison authorities and police used tear gas to disperse them to control. Now the situation is under control and stable,” the Chief Minister told the journalists.
Riot in Shwe Bo prison was follow by the riot in Maw Lite prison of Kalay township, on the same day. The protesting inmates reportedly said that the president pardon which were given on April 17, April 26 and May 7 are unfair and unequal and they have no hope for the freedom.
The all rioting prisons in Myitkyina prison in Kachin State, Hpa-an prison in Karen State, Tharyarwaddy prison in Pegu division and Pathein prision in Irrawaddy division are now under control with no causality.
The protesting inmates from all prison urged the government to give amnesty to every inmates, to allow the media to visit inside the prison and to let the visit of the human rights council to the prison.
According to the prison authorities, the investigation over the riots are on its way and the legal action against the inmates who incite the riot are planned to be taken under the prison rule and regulation.
